SEO Tutorial Lesson 8

Flash

One of the first tips is regarding the use of Flash on your site. Flash is extremely difficult for a search engine to comprehend and because of this it generally will skip this part of a site. For this reason, it is probably not a good idea to include any excess amount of unnecessary Flash in your web pages.

Over using keywords and phrases

Everyone is familiar with spam and spamming, for those who are not, spam is the needless junk mail, which marketers and other unscrupulous parties send to your email address. Another form of spamming is the overuse or “stuffing” of keywords and phrases as Meta tags on web pages. Every search engine has some type of built-in filter for those who use too many keywords. Your web site can suffer tremendously if the search engine bot or crawlers catch on. Believe me, they will catch on so do not do it.

Bad Links

Suppose you have an outgoing link to a malware site. This is a horrible thing to do. Always make certain you do not link to a black hat SEO or other banned site. If you happen to do it without your knowledge and only realize it after you are dropped from Google’s index, you can usually correct the problem by requesting re-inclusion using the form at Google. The same goes for adult porn sites, linking to one of them will cause you to be dropped from Google. Make certain the outgoing link is worth the loss in traffic you will suffer as a result.

Buying Links Rapidly in Quantity

Developing links gradually is a great idea. Developing one thousand links in a one-week span of time is detrimental to your search engine rankings. You will likely be sandboxed by Google and wait at minimum 2-4 months to be re-included.

Too Many Outgoing Links

Unless your site is a directory or other type of reference site, it usually is not a good idea to have more than a handful of outgoing links from any one web page. In addition, including a link exchange directory in your regular web site is also a bad idea. It is much better to designate a sub domain or an entirely different domain for your directory and links. These are just some of the issues that you may face that will cause search engines to score your site low. There are many, many other factors, which can cause you to rank low even on a primarily content or article web site.

One final thought, there are an increasing number of disabled humans now frequenting the Internet, it is always a good idea to make your web pages accessible and user-friendly for those who cannot speak, hear, or have some visual shortcoming.

Finally, when all else fails and nothing seems to raise your search positions, it may be time to hire a Professional Search Engine Optimizer. Usually a freelancer or consultant is your most cost-effective option. This is especially true if you expect one on one attention. The average cost can range anywhere from $1000 - $50000 (£600 - £25000) depending on the size of your web site and number of pages involved. Do not forget optimization is not a quick one-step solution; rather, it is a process, which can be tedious and time consuming. Rankings will not usually improve over night. Expect the World Wide Web to deliver at its own pace which is typically 3-12 months.
